CHATHAM — Betty Mack Gobbell, 84, of Chatham, formerly of Memphis, Tenn., died April 29, 2010.
Betty was born in Centralia, Illinois on May 7, 1925, the fourth child of Victor Elwood and Ruth Pearl Clayton. She married James Franklin Mack Sr. in 1946. The couple lived in Tennessee and Texas before settling back in Memphis, where they owned and operated Mack's Snack Bar on Second Street, until his semi-retirement in 1972. While in Memphis they were active members of the Leawood Baptist Church. Several years after Frank's death in 1979, Betty married Benjamin F. Gobbell of West Memphis, Ark. They had a wonderful six years together until his death. In 2006 Betty moved to Spokane, Wash. to be near her daughter, where she lived until relocating to Cape Cod in 2008, to be near her son.
Betty is survived by her daughter Linda and her husband Robert Bowles, of Spokane, Wash., and her son James Jr., and his husband Jon Arterton of Provincetown, Mass.; two granddaughters, Cristen Avlonitis and Lauren Locke, and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral is Wednesday, May 5, at 11 a.m., (visitation from 10 a.m.) at the Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, with burial at Memory Hill Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Memphis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's memory to Broad Reach Hospice, 390 Orleans Road, Chatham, MA 02650-1154, Liberty Commons Skilled Care Center, at the same address, or the charity of your choice.
