The Clayton's of Granville County NC 1750-1800

Looking for a Clayton family history expert: Two Clayton families were Granville County NC from 1750 to about 1790 or so. One, lead by Jeremiah went to South Carolina (The Goin family was involved with this Clayton group) The other well documented Clayton's (Daniel Clayton's group) moved on to Person Co. NC. My question is, are these two families related or not? Jeremiah & William Clayton are first seen in the 1754 Militia list in Granville. Is there anyone out there who has done work on these families and knows if there were any connections? Thank you in advance for your help!
