Circa 1880s photo of George A. Clayton, Sr.
Posted by: Paul Peterson (ID *****2235) Date: August 03, 2010 at 19:15:40

I found the subject studio portrait of an elderly bearded man taken by Excelsior Portrait Co., Philadelphia, PA. It is identified on the back of the mount in period handwriting:

"Return to
Geo A Clayton
3918 Germantown Ave"

This individual is listed in the 1860 and 1870 Census data for Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA; the 1880 Census data for Philadelphia (resided at 3918 Germantown Avenue), Philadelphia Co., PA; and the 1900 Census data for Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.

George A. Clayton, Sr. was born Jan 1820 in PA. He was employed as a carpenter and later as a tobacco store operator. He was married to Mary (maiden name unknown), born about 1826 in PA, and/or Keziah (maiden name unknown), born about 1824 in PA (same wife?). His son George A. Clayton, Jr., was born Aug 1847 in PA; in about 1867, he married Mary E. (maiden name unknown), born Nov 1844 in PA. The son worked as a paper hanger.
