THOMAS CLEASBY, born around 1823-1826 in Yorkshire, England, died probably in Iowa 1880-1885. Married Ellen or Eleanor Pratt (ca 1825-1893). She was also born in Yorkshire, according to English census records, and is buried in Newton Union Cemetery, Newton, Jasper County, Iowa. The family is in the 1880 census at Newton.

Some census records of their children show them having immigrated in 1869, but the family appears in the 1871 census in the county of Durham, England. One census gives the immigration year as 1873. Four of their children were christened in St. Andrew's Church, Auckland, Durham. This town is apparently named "Bishop Auckland" now, and is about 13 miles from the village of Cleasby, in northern Yorkshire.

The date of marriage and the total number of children of Thomas and Ellen/Eleanor (Pratt) Cleasby are not known. These names are found in the LDS International Genealogical Index and census records:

Sarah Ann Cleasby, christened 24 Jun 1853 Auckland.

Margaret Cleasby, christened 13 Sep 1855 Auckland, died 1925, married Thomas Hanson. Buried Mt. Zion Cem, LaCenter WA.

John Cleasby (1858-1917), married Clara Ella Hanson. Buried Mt. Zion Cem, LaCenter WA.

Thomas Cleasby, christened 22 Apr 1860 Auckland.
Another Thomas Cleasby was apparently christened on 12 Jul 1863 in Auckland along with

Isabella Cleasby (1863-1880).

James Cleasby, b ca 1869 England. In 1885 Iowa state census at Newton with widowed mother and brother Thomas. Quite likely the James Cleasby, b Oct 1869 England, who went to Alaska in Feb 1898 and appears in Skagway in 1900 census, listing home as Grand Junction CO and year of immigration as 1871; in Seattle WA 1910 and 1920 censuses with wife and children.
