Royal Lewis Cleaves, 87, of Winthrop died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at his daughter's summer home in Waldoboro.

He was born in east Winthrop, July 12, 1915, the son of Lewis Marriner Cleaves and Alice Vertie (Mace) Cleaves.

Royal graduated from Cony High School and attended Northeastern University and Northwestern University Traffic Institute. He served in the Army during World War II.

From 1933 to 1938 he worked for A&P Tea Company in Augusta; from 1938 to 1941 he worked at Bath Iron Works; from 1941 to 1945 he served in the Army; from 1946 to 1949 he was a self employed electrician; from 1949 to 1952 he worked at Hudson Pulp and Paper; from 1952 to 1964 he worked in the Adjutant General's Department of the Maine National Guard; and from 1964 to 1981 he worked for the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles retiring in 1981 as chief examiner.

Royal was a former selectman for the Town of Readfield and a former member of the Winthrop Planning Board.

Mr. Cleaves was a member of many Masonic Organizations including, member and Past Master, Lafayette Lodge 48 AF&AM, Readfield, and holder of the 50 year Veterans Medal, member and past High Priest, Winthrop Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, member and Past Illustrious Master, Alpha Council, Royal and Select Masters 3, Hallowell, member and Past Commander, Trinity Commandery 7, Knights Templar, Augusta, Past District Deputy Grand Master and Past Senior Grand Warden, Grand Lodge of Maine, AF&AM, member and Past President of the District Deputies Association, of Maine, Past Grand Master of the Second Veil, Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Maine, member of the Maine Council, Order of the Thrice Illustrious Masters, member of Maine Council, Order of High Priesthood, member of Past Officers Association 1, Maine, member and Past Eminent Prior of Pine Tree Priory 65, Knights York Cross of Honor, Maine, member of Eusebius Conclave 3, Grand Imperial Council of Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine, member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Augusta and past Thrice Potent Master, Augusta Valley Lodge of Perfection and holder of the Scottish Rite Meritorious Service Medal, member of the Consistory of Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Portland, Member of Kora Temple Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Lewiston and a member of Abenaki Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Royal was predeceased by his wife, Doris Bradstreet Cleaves in 1990; his former wife, Elizabeth Cleaves Rice in 1995; and an infant son, David Hoyt Cleaves.

Mr. Cleaves is survived by a daughter, Marie Cleaves Tysinger of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may visit from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Sam Richards will officiate. Burial will follow in the East Winthrop Cemetery
