I am still working on John Cleaves of Smithfield, this is my husband's family. I have found that John was on the 1830 census in Mercer, can't remember if Ezekiel was there with him. Anyway, it appears that John & Ezekiel are related somehow as they both came from Kennebunkport area after 1828. John b.1791 d. 11/7/1855 in Saco, ME and his wife Susan Thompson b. abt. 1798 d. aft. 1880 John & Susan married in Lyman, ME 12/4/1817. John left Smithfield and was in Saco on the 1850 census. John died in Saco. I have not found Susan's death recorded but she is still alive in Kennebunk in 1880. I have John's parents who were John Cleaves Jr and Lucy Burnham, John Jr was the son of John Cleaves Sr. and Abigail Bickford. Much of my info is from the "John Cleaves family of Arundel, ME" by Alice M. Branson.
I have been to the cemetery in Smithfield where Ezekiel & Martha are buried trying to connect John & Ezekiel, can't figure if they were brothers or cousins, I think cousins.
John & Susan's son John Harlow Cleaves born in Smithfield is my husband's great grandfather.
This whole gang are descendants of William Cleaves of Beverly, there is a book "The Progeny of Wm Cleaves of Beverly" where you will find some information, but beware of this book as I have found a massive number of errors in it.
Please let me know if you find anything..there is a link to Lowell, Mass with Ezekiel's son Jeremiah. My husband has a distant cousin who I believe to be related to Ezekiel her ancestors: Ebenezer & Charles Cleaves are in both Maine and Lowell, MA...So much more to do on these families.
