The Scottish census for 1861 shows Thomas Cleland and his wife Jane (both aged 23) living at Butts Street, Annan.Thomas' profession is Blacksmith and his birthplace given as Dalton, Dumfriesshire.Jane's birthplace is given as Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire.
I cannot find Thomas in 1851 but there is a family of Clelands living at Brae in Dalton in the 1851 census - a farm labourer David Cleland, born 1801 in Edinburgh, his wife also born 1801 in Edinburgh and children John Cleland 25, Elizabeth 23, James 21 and Annie 15, all born at Dalton. This is probably the family you're looking for.
The family to which Lt Col Robert Stewart Cleland (my GGG Uncle) belonged originated from the Clelands of that Ilk in Lanarkshire.I have in my possession a brooch given by Robert to his sister Margaret.Their older brother John was my GG Grandfather. There were two other younger siblings, James Vance Cleland and Samuel Frederick Stewart Cleland.
Their parents were Samuel Jackson Cleland (who was killed aged 34 when a wall toppled onto him) and Elizabeth Joyce. She raised a large mausoleum to his memory in Newtownards churchyards (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dundonald)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dundonald).
Samuel's parents were the Rev John Cleland, perpetual curate of Newtownards and Londonderry agent, Prebendary of Armagh; Precentor of Armagh Cathedral and Rector of Killevey and his wife Esther Jackson. It was through her family that the family inherited Stormont Castle, where my great grandfather was born in 1868.It is possible that John Cleland's father may have been Moses. The family came across from Cleland in Lanarkshire in the early 17th century and were prominant landowners.
I hope the above is helpful.
