I was once a teacher, and tended to be known to staff and pupils alike as 'Clifty', a readily pronouncable diminuitive which I had had to learn to tolerate from childhood!
I worked in the Singapore Ministry of Education for a while. The Chinese staff had no difficulty whatsoever. I was known as Dr Cleeeffft, with a very definite 't'.
My earlier comments are worthy of serious consideration, however. The sound represented by the letter 't' is of a very high frequency, whereas that represented by 'ed' is much lower: hence one could well be cliffed by the aurally challenged (as well as by the (far greater numbers) intellectually challenged, amongst whom you pass your days!
