I have been given the following information about my family. I can't vouch for its accuracy.
It starts with Joseph Clift, who married Margaret Taylor at Dawley Magna Parish Church, Shropshire in 1760. They had the following children: Mary 1761, Phoebe 1763, Lydia 1765, John 1769, Joseph 1776 and William 1780.
Joseph married Ann Furber at Wellington, Shropshire in 1800. They had the following children: Margaret 1803, Joseph (date nk) and Frederick 1827 (there may have been others).
Frederick married Ann (? in 1861. In the 1861 census they are listed as living in Willenhall (a small town near to Woverhampton), where he was working as a coal miner, and having the following children: Frederick (10), Jemima (8), William (7), Thomas (5), and twins Jacob and Esau (2) In the 1871 census they are listed as living still living in Willenhall and also now having my grandfather Josiah (8).
Josiah married Maria in Wolverhampton in 1888. The 1891 census lists them as living in Willenhall and having the following children: Frederick (3), Annie May (1 month). Subsequently they had Sidney (my father), Jemima and Harry, all of whom I knew personally, of course!
Thus the family moved at some time during the working life of Frederick from the birthplace of the industrial revolution in Shropshire (now the area known as Telford), to the 'Black Country' area of Woverhampton. This move was made by many workers as the importance of the Shropshire iron industry declined. Interestingly, I worked for the Schools Psychological Service in that area in the 1960's. Population surveys conducted at the time revealed that the standards reached by the children of the indigenous population were very low and the suggestion was made that that they were a generally subnormal 'rump' population, left behind by the march of progress!!
Do you see any links in any of this with what you know of your family?
