I think he fought at Gettysburg during the Civil War. If you visit there his name is on a marker inside the New York monument on top of Little Roundtop. It's a bronze or brass marker and I've been there many times and always clean his name so it stands out among the others. I never knew if he was really a relative but he has the same name so that is good enough for me. I found a picture on the web and you may have too.
