Nancy:

Here is some of what I have, but I myself have not done the footwork on this information. What follows comes from the book, Barney B. and Abigail Clover and Allied Families, compiled by M.P. Peterson, June 1981, which my mother heard about from her aunt Peg and purchased for me at the time it was published.

The Schuyler family originally "van Schuyler. Schuijler in Dutch means a place of shelter, or it may be from the German word "schuler", a scholar. Two brothers came to America about 1650, Col. Philip Pieterse (son of Pieter) and David Pieterse Schuyler. The last document where Philip used Pieterse was in 1672, which signified their father died. Col. Philip was the progenitor of such famous people as General Philip Schulyer, of Revolutionary war fame, and Elizabeth Margaret Schuyler, who married Alexander Hamilton, who was the 1st Secretary of the United States Treasury.
"The other brother, David Pieterse, we follow with detail of one branch of his descendants. He was the ancestor of the Montgomery County Schuylers.

M.P. Peterson does not provide the line of descent to Gen. Schuyler, so I have no authority for the validity of the information provided below. I have relied on genealogies posted on RootsWeb.comís WorldConnect project. If that information is correct then Gen. Philip Schuyler is connected to us in the following way:

Generation 1: Pieter Schuyler m. Geertruyt Philips
Children included David Pieterse Schuyler (our ancestor) and Philip Pieterse Schuyler, the grandfather of Gen. Philip Schuyler.

Generation 2:       Philip Pieterse m. Margarita Van Slichtenhorst
              Children included Johannes Schuyler

Generation 3:       Johannes Schuyler m. Elizabeth Staats
              Children included Gen. Philip Schuyler.

If you would like to peruse the various genealogies on WorldConnect, here is the search link:

I hope this is helpful.

Scott
