The Independent Patriot June 8, 1898 Lamoni, Iowa HOME NEWS. R. L. WINDALL, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, took a survey of Lamoni residents for insurance purposes. Dr. HANSEN removed a Obalagion from Mrs. GALLOP's right eye Saturday morning. He was assisted by Dr. GREER. Mr. A. COPPACK and wife, of LeRoy, closed a visit at Wm. SPURRIER's Monday and returned home. Mr. COPPACK is an old friend and schoolmate of Mr. SPURRIER, and was an unusually welcome visitor. W. A. BLAIR came in last week from his mercantile tour of Central and Southern Missouri. He reports colder weather, more constant rain, and a more backward condition of crops generally there than here. Mr. B. F. PETERSON returned Tuesday from his trip to Kansas City and points south including a jaunt through southern Arkansas. He reports much more rain farther south than we have had here. Rev. G. W. MAINE, of Blockton, Iowa; and Rev. W. C. SMITH, of Kellerton, passed through the city Tuesday on their way to Leon to attend the M. E. district conference held at that place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. Mendall CLUM, Robert ALLEN, E. K. ANDERSON, Bert DERRY, Jay BARR and R. J. LAMBERT, with their wives and little ones, have been tasting the sweets of camp life on Grand River, just north of Davis City since last Friday. Several of the men went by team Friday, taking tents and camping outfits, and their wives followed on the afternoon train. Others of the men went down Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon. The intention was to stay a week. Examine the label on your paper. Do not think you know it is all right. Look so that you may be sure. Mr. R. W. BRUCE, County Recorder, was in Lamoni Tuesday, looking after his candidacy for recorder on the republican ticket. We learn from him that Representative WEMPLE was recently severely injured by the kick of a horse, which was followed by apoplexy, making the Major's condition very critical. Children's Day at the Brick Sunday was seriously interfered with by the rain. Quite an audience, however, assembled and listened to the exercises. The church was very nicely decorated. At the M. E. church in the afternoon a crowd that completely filled the room assembled, the storm having cleared away. The exercises as published were satisfactorily given. The decorations were neat and appropriate. O. O. HUDSON and R. M. LEWIS after some months experimenting, have invented an acetyline gas lamp. It takes the raw material which comes in dry form something like lime, converts it by the action of water automatically dropped upon it, into gas, and utilizes it in the production of a brilliant white light - so white it is claimed that in it colors may be easily detected. One of these lamps has been sold to Frank BLACK for use in his barber shop. The inventors expect to push the matter as soon as they are in shape to do so. Success to the venture.
