It's my understanding that the spelling of names only became standardised in relatively recent times. When most people were illiterate, the spelling depended on what the scribe thought he heard!
I use the spelling Clunes, but have also seen Cluness, Clunis and Clunas.
My people were living in Sutherlandshire in the 18th & early 19th centuries. However, I have it on good advice that the name comes from Perthshire.

Anybody looking for any Gordon Clunes?
