After I wrote my previous response I sat down to organize this Clute family a bit more. Here's a prelim:
Daniel Toll Clute's three sons who are listed as early settlers of Leicester: A - Jellis [b.1780]; B - Thomas Bancker [b.1788]; C - William Bancker [b.1791].
A - Jellis: I have no record of who he married. He seems to have had two sons but I'm only somewhat sure of one [Daniel b.c1816 who married Martha and had Daniel & Mary]
B - Thomas B. married Clarissa Lambert.Sons (1) John Lawrence [b.1815, m. Margaret Mellen, ch: Mary V., Nellie E., Charles H., William E., Effie, Caroline, George];(2) Jellis [b.c1822, m. Maria, ch: Clarissa, John, Mary, David, Sarah, Jellis, Clarence, Rosetta];(3) Thomas [b.c1827; probably f/o Daniel (b.c1852) who is in 1860 Census with him and mother Clarissa; no idea who he married];(4) Daniel or David [b.c1829];(5) Charles Andrew [b.c1830, m. Elvina ??];(6) James [b.c1832, m. Amanda Eldridge, ch: John, Mary J., Amanda, James, Frank, Francis, Walter].
C - William B. married Harriet Jones.Sons (1) (?) William Jr. m. Margaret, ch: Silas, Victoria, Elnora];(2) Alexander [b.c1823, married (1) Sarah Jones, ch: James c1854 NY, Charles c1857 NY, Sarah J. c1859 NY; married ?? (2) Catherine; married (3) ?? Huldah, more ch: William H. c1864 IL, Maude c1867 IL];(3) Daniel F. [b.c1834;?? d.1866 NY, ?? m. Harriet??];[4] John [b.c1826, married Emily (b.c1839 IL), ch: William c1867 IL];[5] George [b.c1839];[6] Jellas/Thomas [b.c1839, ?? married Nancy Jones, ch: Fayette, George];[7] Peter [b.c1845].I believe Wm had another son born during the 1820's (??).
Misc. "leftovers" in the area:
[1] Daniel Clute in 1850 Leicester ae 35 with a wife Laura and daughter Elizabeth.
[2] 1860 Leicester, James Clute 22, living with family of Miles Sharpstein.
[3] Charles S. Clute [b.c1813] m.12-12-1838 Adeline E. Mix:
1840 Leicester, Liv. Co. 01011-10011
1850 Hume, Allegany Co.:Charles S. Chute 37, Adaline 33, Jellis 15, Nancy 13, (Adeline) Elisabeth 8, Harriett 6.
1860 Perry, Wyoming Co.:Charles S. Clute 48, Adeline Elizabeth 19 (daughter).
My first guess is that Charles S. was the second son of A - Jellis.
The Daniel/David problems are complicated by the fact that the script Daniel and the script David look remarkably alike in those old census records.I'm therefore not sure just how many of each there were.As to the two Daniel Clutes who married Harriets, one Daniel supposedly died 1866 in NY, while the other Daniel migrated to McHenry Co., IL and had children Thomas c1864 IL, Hattie c1865 IL, and May c1871 IL.Which Daniel belonged to William B. or Thomas B. I can't tell.
This all probably causes fewer questions than answers.Joyce.
