John Clutterbuck 10/21/01
As a result of my previous post in October 2001, we have discovered many cousins and unknown branches of our Clutterbuck family still living in the area of greater Manchester, UK, which includes Eccles, Lancashire.
As a result of these relatives contacting me, we have formed new friendships in the family and have built out a record of our Clutterbuck family tree. We've also re-connected with relatives we hadn't seen, in some cases, since childhood. There is still much to discover, but we are continuing our search as a team and sharing our discoveries.
It seems that our Clutterbuck ancestors came from Ireland and settled in the Lancashire area near Manchester, England sometime after 1865 and before 1889. We're not sure when, exaclty, but think it was in the 1880s.
The 1891 Census shows my great-grandfather Carique William Clutterbuck and his wife Annie Grundy in Eccles. That appears to be the earliest census record discovered for this family.
We have learned that their children were Joseph; Frances; Doris; William; Henry; and Annie. Many of the descendants of these children are now living in Canada as well as England.
The 1901 Census shows one James Clutterbuck, then 41, also born in Ireland married to Mary (Cullen?) b. Ireland, then 36, with children: William 15; Rebeccah 13; Marg 10; James 5. {We think that this head of household, James, may be a brother of Carique William Clutterbuck, above. If so, his father would have been named William. Can anyone confirm that for us, or dispel the notion? That seems likely, with his eldest son named William, as well.)
Also found in Eccles, Lancashire, on the 1901 Census is one Henry Clutterbuck 30 married to Margaret 28 and their children: Annie 9; Elsie 8; and Mildred 3. (We don't know if they are related to either James or Carique William Clutterbuck also living in Eccles. It was a small community and the Clutterbuck name was not as common there as in other parts of England.)
We know that Carique William Cluttebuck b. 1863 in Ireland was the son of one William Clutterbuck, a government engineer.
Regarding our Irish Clutterbuck connections, we are very interested in learning more about:
William Clutterbuck
Family Archive #188 International Records: Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864
Has anyone noted any connections to this William Clutterbuck that might show his line and lead us to connections with our Clutterbuck relatives in Ireland today?
We are very interested in making connections to any Clutterbucks with Irish roots. Searching genealogical records in Ireland is very challenging, due to the fire in the government records office that destroyed 19th century records. It is, therefore, more important than ever for all Clutterbuck descendants now living to communicate with each other using the power of the Internet to share their knowledge of Clutterbuck Irish roots and complete the Irish part of the Clutterbuck story in collaboration with each other.
Since beginning our search for Clutterbuck ancestors, we have grown to appreciate living connections with extended Clutterbuck families worldwide, some related to us and others not. We have created a website for the Clutterbuck community at www.clutterbuck.org where all those connected to the Clutterbuck name are welcome to discuss a broad range of subjects beyond genealogy in a "family reunion" style environment online.
