The present name "Clyburn" began in the small town of "Cliburn" in Northern England, very close to the Scottish Border. At the present time you can find Cliburn as a town, Cliburn Manor, as well as the Cliburn Church. Several years ago "The Claiborne Clan" made a visit to this town and in May (2000) 17 of us met at King's Lynn (on England's western shore) to observe the placement of a memorial marker honoring thebusiness site of Thomas Claiborne from which William Claiborne left for Virginia where he became the Secretary of the Virginia Colony. There are many variances of the Clyburn name but that spelling seems to have begun in NC. At any rate two of William's sons moved into SC prior to the 1790 census. William settled in the Chesterfield and Kershaw area and Lewis settled in the Lancaster area. Lewis had two wives with about 23 children!! His second wife, Sarah Kirkley, is my GGgrandmother as he is my GGgrandfather. My Ggrandparents were Henry Nixon Clyburn and Addie Ogburn. My Clyburn grandparents were John Frederick Clyburn and Martha McDowell Crenshaw, and my parents were John Henry Clyburn and Margaret Ophelia Pinson. Mother and I joined the Star Fort Chapter of DAR on Moses Pinson and I have that line back to Rev. Aaron Pinson.
Surely this will settle the origin of our name. I found it through many years of searchiing through five different families!!The Duckett family (Richard's) fell into my hands almost literally about 5 years ago and the sister of my husband's grandfather was my greatgrandmother so from there on the search has been easier for some of these folks.
