As found in a recently posted family tree-again on rootsweb.com

Earl Bryant Coe, born July 15, 1857, in Seymour Twp., Northumberland County, ON, Canada, son of Benjamin and Nancy (Harlow) Coe of Ontario, Canada, and Genesee County, MI. He married Dec. 28, 1881, at Otisville, Genesee County, MI, Mary C. Freeman, born May 5, 1857, in Michigan, daughter of Edward C. and Julia E. (Shaw) Freeman. His wife died Aug. 15, 1899, in Denver and was buried at Fairmount Cemetery. Earl died Aug. 24, 1908, in Denver and was buried near his wife.

In 1894, Earl B. Coe of Denver, saw a fine, fat beef carcass hanging in a butcher shop. Upon inquiry, he found that the animal had been fattened on sugar beet tops. This led Coe to believe that the mild climate of Colorado was more suitably adapted to the growing of sugar beets than that of neighboring Nebraska where the plant was known to grow. Enlisting the aid of two friends - State Builder, Isaac Newton Stevens, and financier, John F. Campion - he carried his plan through the Denver Chamber of Commerce to the Agriculture Department in Washington. The Chamber of Commerce distributed seed to some 2,300 farmers in 1897 and in the following fall, 812 samples of sugar beets were sent to the Agricultural College in Fort Collins for judging. $1,000.00 in prize money was given by the Chamber to the winning growers. Thus, from an idea suggested by a beef carcass in a butcher shop, grew one of Colorado's great industries - the growing and processing of sugar beets. Three men with an idea and those who aided them were among the sturdy pioneers who helped BUILD AN EMPIRE IN THE LAND OF THE GOLDEN WEST.

His brothers Fred E. Coe, William H. Coe, George M. Coe and sister Ione N. Coe followed him to Denver. Brothers Ira Coe and Benjamin Erastus Coe remained in Michigan.
