--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. James Patrick COADY 1 (James , Michael ) was born 2 12 Apr 1848/4 APR 1852 in Margaree Cb. N.S. and was christened in St Michaels RC.. East Margaree. He died 1928 in Sheet Hbr. and was buried in St Peter's Sheet Harbour Ns.can..

Note: Immigrant:IN 1901 CENSUS BIRTH DATE WAS GIVEN AS APRIL 4TH 1852
[by Marguerite Coady Kuhn:]
About the year 1830 three brothers, Martin, Peter and John Coady came from Tipperary, Ireland. They were farmers and fishermen and they had their own schooner. The French had no use for them because they got more salmon, etc, than they did. They sold their fish in Halifax, and they did most of the fishing in the Margaree River.

They had land grants and were on their way, the three of them,in a canoe to purchase land up the river. They were known to have money belts on them with quite a bit of money. They ran into a bad squall and the canoe capsized. They couldn't swim and called for help. The French heard them but refused to help them and they were drowned. Their bodies were recovered but the money was gone, so foul play was suspected. They were buried in a cemetary at Margaree Forks. Moses Coady tried to find the graves but vandals had destroyed the markers.

Before the year 1830 a Coady, (not directly connected with our family) was thrown into prison in the Irish Revolution and was to be hanged. His wife visited him and later when the guards went to check on him they found him gone and his wife there. He had escaped in his wife's clothes. He escaped to St. Peters, a small village in Cape Breton close to Glace Bay. Later when the Irish government pardoned him, he returned to Ireland and told the Coady brothers about Cape Breton.

HOW TRUE THIS STORY IS,I HAVE NO IDEA BUT I INCLUDE IT AS A MATTER OF INTEREST. G. D. QUILLAN

James married 1, 2 Catherine Bridget LOGAN "KATE" 2, daughter of DAVID LOGAN and ELIZABETH HERD, on 23 Aug 1874 in Tangier, Hfx.co.ns.. KATE was born 3 4 Jul 1852/14 OCT 1849 in Sheet Habour Ns.can.. She died 1939 in Sheet Hbr. and was buried in St Peters RC.Church Sheet Hbr..

IN 1901 CENSUS HER BIRTH DATE WAS GIVEN AS 14 OCT. 1849.
Excerpt from "Historic Families of Kentucky," by Thomas Marshall Green, originally published Cincinnati, 1889, reprinted for Clearfield Co., by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1996, pp. 117-119:

"The family which is the subject of this sketch can not be definitely traced to any of those which have been mentioned (which go back to Scotland as early as 1278, the first families attaining great heights.) . . . For generations before any of them came to America, they had been plain people in Ireland, accustomed to rely upon themselves or their individual respectability as well as for the means of subsistence, and were sturdily independent.

Their tradition is that their ancestor was a Presbyterian who fled from Ayrshire to escape the persecutions of John Graham, the Bloody Claverhouse, and with others of his name and kindred, found shelter and refuge in Northern Ireland. Lurgan was the locality of his home. Descendants of this one found their way to Pennsylvania, whose colonial treasurer, James Logan, for whom the Mingo chief was named, was, in no distant degree, their kinsman. Two of these, James and David Logan, soon left Pennsylvania, and settled in Augusta Co. It is believed they were brothers. Both young, both soldiers in the French and Indian Wars. James settled in what is now Rockbridge Co.

. . . David Logan, the other of these emigrant brothers, married, when young, in Pennsylvania. He probably went to Virginia early in 1740. On the 22nd of May, of that year, fourteen heads of families appeared at the Orange Court-house (Augusta coutny not having been then established, and the territory being embraced in that of Orange) to 'prove their importation.' The first of these was Alexander Breckinridge, who made oath that he had imported 'himself, and John, George, Robert, Smith, and Letitia Breckinridge, from Ireland to Philadelphia, and from thence to this colony, at his own charges, and this is the first time of his proving his and their rights in order to obtain land.' . . . The eighth was David Logan, and from the record it is ascertained that the given name of his wife was Jane. . . . The record of Rev. John Craig, the first Presbyterian minister in the Valley, shows that on May 3, 1743, he baptized Benjamin, child of David Logan, and that on March 24, 1745, he baptized David Logan's son, Hugh. Thus are the ages of these two brothers approximated. In 1763, the mother of Benjamin Logan, and widow of David, lived on Kerr's Creek. This Jane Logan became the mother of six children: Benjamin, John, Hugh, and Nathaniel; the daughters, Mary and Sarah. The emigrant died early, leaving a modest but independent estate to the widow and his offspring, the eldest of whom was but fourteen; but bequeathing them also the priceless inheritance of vigorous intellects in robust bodies, well trained in the principles of morality and religion, self-reliance, fearlessness, and indomitable energy."

From a posting on the Todd page of FamilyHistory.com by Cathie Logan Sharpe, Dec. 7, 1999:
"David and a brother John emigrated from Lurgen, County Armagh, Ireland, to Montgomery Co., PA, thence to Orange Co., VA in 1743."
