It is funny that you have posted this message, because I just received a letter from a second cousin to my husband, whose grandfather was Samuel Walter Cobia of Greenville,
South Carolina. He suggested to me, that he had heard when he was younger, that the family name was De'Corbiere, changed to Cobia when they came to the US, and that they came from the Corbiere section of France. He said that if we dig back two generations from Samual Walter who was born in 1868, we should be able to prove this. So far I came up blank until I read your post. Do you have any more info?
