Hello Don, Thanks for the message, Cockburn is the correct spelling of the name in Scotland. The variant Coburn can be found mainly in Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia & New Zealand. The main reason for the change
was it was spelt as it sounded. Colburn originates in England and is not connected with the Cockburns. One example is Edward Colburn who left England for America in the 17th century and later the L was dropped from the name. Charles Coburn the late actor
was descended from this person. James Coburn
the actor, his name is actually Cockburn but was changed to Coburn for the movies.
Cogburn comes from a family in Georgia, part of that family split and went to Arkansas
and changed the spelling from Cockburn to Cogburn, this was in the 19th century. One member of this family was Ruben J. Cogburn, he was portrayed by John Wayne in the film
"True Grit". I hope this of some help to you
and if you need to know more you can let me know. Regards, Russell
