Much of my research indicates that the name "Cockerham" originated in England and various dialects, pronunciations, and probably phonetic spelling have led to the many variations we see today. The Scottish name "Cochran"/"Cochrane" has been confused and intermingled with Cockerham to create a hard-to-follow trail for both names. Here in western NC the name for one family was, from official records in Virginia, spelled Cockerham, pronounced Cockrum, and started being spelled Cochran about the turn of the 20th century.I have also found the name spelled Cocreham and Cokerham, so anyone researching any of these families should check all possible spellings.
