Hello Lyman,
Regarding the mysteriously recent Edward Coddington, presumed descendant of Gov. William, someone did email me privately with some excellent information. In short, Edward married and had 5 daughters and 3 sons, but, with the potential exception of Robert (b. abt 1841, living 1850, thereafter disappears), none had male progeny that survived to carry on the Coddington name. Thus the experts seem to have been right: no modern American Coddingtons descend from Gov. William.
Nevertheless, the genealogy of Gov. William in books is seriously incomplete.
Coddington genealogy is complex.John I. said in many of his letters that he personally did not think some of the more serious problems would ever be resolved, by which he meant that documentary proof for putative relations was gone, such as the problems surrounding the descendants of William (1680-1753).
However, I just read that Boston vital records for the early 1800's are short by about 25,000 people (that is, the city grew by 30,000, but birth records only attest to 5,000), and that one must look to the parish records of 43 churches to resolve the issue.Even pros do not check all 43 churches, so we may hope that as rare and difficult records are codified, some of our problems may indeed be resolved.
John I., though, got a lot of his info by writing Coddington's he found and enclosing questionnaire to be returned, just as Merlyn got his by patient correspondence.
As far as being successor to Merlyn, I do have copies of his gedcom if anyone is interested, though I don't have nearly as much time as I would like to pursue genealogy.
