I have a g.g.grandfather, Walter Thomas COFF, originally COFFIELD, born Lancashire UK 1829-1830. He was one of several brothers, named william, Thomas, John and possibly charles. Walter Thomas left Liverpool and ended up in Victoria, Australia in 1851 at the Ballarat gold find - he was 22 and an ex-miner from Lancashire. Father was possibly Walter. I know at least one of his brothers moved to the USA about 1850 - posssibly used the name COFF - they were illiterate and the name was abbreviated from COFFIELD. I am searching for related family - I have Walter Thomas COFF (formerly COFFIELD) tree from 1852 to present in Australia which is 95% complete. I'm not on the internet - anyone who may be able to help or is tracing the same family please write: Sandra Maiden, 4/6 Arnott Court, KELMSCOTT W.AUSTRALIA 6111. By the way, anyone finding Walter COFF on the Mormon Family Page site should ignore the fact that he is said to have been born in Ballarat Victoria Australia in 1830 - Ballarat did not exist then - only when gold was found in 1850 did a few tents spring up along the creek that was later to become the gold mining town/city of Ballarat.
