Responding to Doris Thomas in Kittery Maine. The proper name is John I Coggeshall (Ingersoll was his middle name) and it does make a difference in searching for material on him in Google and elsewhere. You will find references to him in the Smithsonian listing of American artists and in the University of Lowell, where my mother donated a lot of material.
I am Coggeshall's descendant (my summer house in Gloucester, MA was the center of his summer art school)and not an art specialist. However I do know that JIC had a hierarchy of production, that he cherished oil painting, that he did watercolors for fun and profit, and that he ppainted some of his photographs and engravings for profit and publicity. It sounds like yours is in the latter category, and normally would be at the lower end of the value chain. However I understand from the Cape Anjn Historical Museum that painted photos are in great demand, so it may be worth more than I would have thought.
I know a lot about JIC, but won't expand here. If you want to email me ([email protected]) I can give you further details, and if you can send me an image of the artwork I might be able to tell you more about the location.
I appreciate your interest and hope to hear from you.
