After many years of searching for ancestors, I was sucessful with the CAULEY spelling. The oral history I gained most of my information from, had the surname spelled incorrectly. Needless to say, I ignored various attempts to guide me to the correct family. I don't remember if I tried the soundex search, or not...I would guess I didn't. Please try CAULEY- you many be surprised with the results you pull up. Remember- the census takers spelled the way they "heard" the names. Also, look for land records, if they are available.
