Hello, Jim Perkins...
I have no information about Richard COKE; however, I'd like to refer you to the posting I made today, number 112, in response to another messagethread in this COKE Family Genforum.
Therein, is a list of many possible variations in spelling for the surname COCKE - which, you may know, also frequently appears written as COOK and/or COOKE in records.
It's information originally found in a genealogical magazine from Virginia.
Although you will NOT need to look for all those many different spellings, not for the late 1800s anyway, you still must keep an eye out not only for COOK/COOKE, but also for COKE/COCKE and COCK/COCKS and COX/COXE.
I did a quick search on google, and there were quite a few search results for the phrase, with quotes, "Andrew Jackson COX."
When I checked over at http://books.google.comhttp://books.google.com -- I found something that MIGHT be of interest.
Unfortunately, it is not from a book located online, and so I couldn't download the book to learn the details, particularly the dates of the individual in question.
Here is all I was able to retrieve:
The Heritage of Craven County, North Carolina - Page 28
by Barbara Maxine Howard Thorne, Eastern North Carolina Genealogical Society - Craven County (N.C.) - 1984
W. Hall; Musicians Andrew J. Cook; David P. McCullen; Pvts. H. Aldridge; John W.
Austin; John Q. Avery; Isaac T. Attmore; John R. Bowers; Geo. ...

It would be interesting to learn what YEARS and/or what war that MUSCICIANS Andrew J. COOK and David P. AUSTIN are associated with.
Perhaps you could post a question at the CRAVEN COUNTY - NC messageboard?
Maybe someone owns a copy of that genealogical reference and will do a free look-up for you?
I seem to recall that there is at least one individual named, "Andrew Jackson COCKE," but I must be mistaken, as I can't locate any info about anyone of that name, today.
I didn't do a thorough search by any means, but you might want to check out Masonic records in the state of California, they MIGHT be available online, as I believe there was an "AJ" or "Andrew J." COOKE mentioned in a book about the Masons or freemasonry in California. (LOTS of people from Texas and themidwest seemed to wind up in California in the late 1800s.)
