I have noticed that the Colgrove name, spelled without the "e", is the spelling generally adopted by the Rhode Island Colegroves AFTER they moved to Connecticut, but before the Revolution. The RI family seems to have retained the "e" spelling. Thus, if one finds one or the other spelling in upstate NY, PA, or the Midwest, that spelling should be considered a lead to earlier origins. I am sure there are exceptions.
