That is the common spelling in eastern Connecticut before the Revolution -- it seems that the RI Colegroves who moved to Voluntown, CT, dropped the "e". I am sure there are other sources for the abbreviated spelling, but I have found that if the name is spelled without the "e", there is a very good chance that that line came through CT before moving to upstate NY, PA, or the Midwest. Either way, the family goes back originally to Rhode Island.
