I might have just the person you mention in my family tree/gedcom file.

Might being the operative word.

My file lists a "James Colgin" born "abt 1852" in virginia. His age was calculated/guessed using the 1860 census which had a record for this person in or around Charles City. 1851 would be about 1852.

I have no birth or death records of this person.

I know his father was William Colgin (son of Col. John Colgin) and mother would be a harriet (unknown last maiden name).

William & Harriet had 4 children that I know of:
John C Colgin (born abt 1845)
William M Colgin (born abt 1849)
Ida M Colgin (born abt 1858)
and the James Colgin I just mentioned.

I would not be surprised if the Virginia state archives has more information on these people.

Hope this helps or gives you a start!
