Collyer/Collier Middlesex, Somerset, Morris, Sussex NJ
I and many cousins are preparing a genealogy of the descendants of Thomas (1) and Susannah Collier, who came to Hingham, Mass. in 1635.Thomas (2) and his wife, Jane Curtis/Jones, founded an extensive family line, many of whom remained in Mass. and Maine for several generations. This line constitutes the bulk of our work to date.
However, there is also aNew Jersey line, founded by Moses (2).Moses was married twice: 1st to Elizabeth Curtis/Jones, sister of Jane, above.Elizabeth died a few days after the birth of her only son, Benoni (1657-after 1678, possibly in Mass.).Moses' 2d wife was Elizabeth Bullard, of Dedham and Charlestown, Mass. They married about December 17, 1657, possibly in Hingham, Mass.Children of Moses and Eliz. Bullard, most probably born in Hingham:
Moses, b. Nov. 8, 1658
Elizabeth, b. Oct. 14, 1659.
Mary, b. Feb 10, 1660/61.
Thomas, bt. June 5, 1664.
Deborah, b. June 20, 1666.
Jemima, [? b. or bt.] Mar. 16, 1667/68
Susannah, b. ca. 1670, probably NOT in Hingham.
All of this second group of 3d generation children, except for Elizabeth (who disappears from the record after birth), went with Moses and Elizabeth to Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey about 1682-83, where Moses died on March 17, 1683/84.
MANY OF THIS LINE HAD CHANGED THE SPELLING OF THE SURNAME TO COLLYER BY 1740 OR SO.
I have very limited information on some of this 3d generation:
Moses (3) soon left Woodbridge, and nothing further is known.

We have more extensive data on Thomas (3 - 1664 to 1718) Collier, his wife Hannah Dennis (bef 1672 - about 1711, Woodbridge, NJ), and many of their descendants--so extensive that I cannot list it all in this space. At least some of this line went to the area of Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey by perhaps 1740 - 1750.Others were soon in Morris and Sussex Counties. There are still significant numbers of Collier/Collyer families in northern New Jersey.
Significant known connections are the marriages of:
Rachel (5) Collyer (John 4, Thomas 3) (b. 1740 - d. 1810, Sparta, Sussex Cty, NJ) and Jonathan Sutton (1735-1818), m. about 1761, possibly Basking Ridge. The descendants of this marriage are known for several generations.
Grace (5) Collyer (John 4, Thomas 3) (b. abt. 1742 - d. abt 1819, ? Morris County, NJ) and Joseph
Doty (1735 - abt. 1804), m. 1762, Woodbridge, NJ.Several generations of this family are tracedin the area of Somerset and Morris County, NJ.
John (5) Collyer (John 4, Thomas 3) (1754 - abt. Sept. 25, 1817, Bernards Twp, Somerset County, NJ) and Rachel Lewis (1760 - ??), m. before 1782, ? Somerset County.Cousin Tim Kelly has provided somegenerations of this family down to the present day, but several individuals are "lost."
Probably of this line of Thomas (3) was a Lt. Thomas Collyer, who served in the Revolution from Somerset County.I have little further on him at present.
ANY OF THESE INDIVIDUALS COULD BE LISTED AS EITHER "COLLIER" OR "COLLYER."
I would like to work with, or exchange information with, anyone who has information on these New Jersey families.
