Could you give me your source regarding the records at Centre Friends about freeing the slaves? I am interested in the actual account, including the dates and the persons involved.

I might recommend that you pick up a copy of John Coltrane: his life and music By Lewis Porter, written a few years ago. He has a genealogy on John Coltrane, but it only goes back 3 generations to a Rev. William H Coltrane, b. about 1858. He was a minister in the AME Zion Methodist Church. According to census records, Wm. H. was literate and both his parents had been born in NC.
