William Coltrane's mother was Mary Trotter,
daughter of James Trotter, a Taylor in
Edenton, N.C. You can find her original
will at the Edenton Court House today.
She left her property to her son William
Coltrane and his three sons. After David
died Mary Trotter married three more times.
The last husband was a Wallace.
After David died James Trotter became
William's guardian. William became a
surveyor and received a large land grant
on Muddy Creek in Randolph County, N.C.
His will is the first recorded will in
Randolph County. He left his land to his
five sons and gave each daughter fifty
dollars. He left his wife Rachael a life-
time right to live in the house as long
as she didn't remarry. He also left her
two of his slaves and a horse. You can
still see where his house was located
