Coltrane Family Genealogy Forum
Thanks for your posting. Nancy Coltrane was one of 11 children of David Coltrane and Hannah Thornburg of Grayson County, VA. She married William White after having four children of her own: Ira Blair Coltrane (b~1815), Morgan, Clark (b1832) and Branson Elliott Coltrane( b.1834, my gg grandfather). Nancy's sister Hannah married William White in 1815 and had 6 children, David, Anne, Rachel, Penninah, William, and Hannah (the last child born in 1834). After Hannah's death, Nancy married her brother-in-law, William and had 2 more children by him, Dieda and Enos. It's verly likely that Ira and maybe all the Coltrane boys were fathered by William White. (I don't think that there was an Ira White).
One story in our family is that William fathered these children because Hannah was an invalid and probably comotose. WIlliam & Nancy lived as husband & wife until they could legally be married - when she passed. Its also possible Nancy was married to a Coltrane; however, the traditional story told by my grandmother was that when Nancy's son, Branson Elliott married Kitty Umbarger, she was disowned by her father, Andrew for having married a 'bastard'.
It has been a mystery as to how Nancy could have educated 4 boys being an unmarried mother; Branson was a cadet at VMI and served honorably in the Civil War, Ira Blair became a well know engineer, built the Hillsville, VA courthouse and the road (what is now Hwy 52) though Fancy Gap, VA. He also served in the House and Senate and there is correspondence where Branson is asking for financial support from his brother, Ira in order to pay for books at VMI.
That may be more than you want to know; however, please let me know if this is correct or if you can add anything. Do you know where Nancy or William White are buried? I've been told Hillsville but haven't found them yet.
