About the French connection. I have found that name COLUMBIA in Canaan,NH about 100 years ago, was Coulombe in Quebec. Sometimes the records are in two forms: one in Quebec, and another in NH. Often the same person.... I also know that Couloumbiere was also a French name, which probably also became Columbus.
I also knew a fellow from Grteece whose name there was Couloumbis, and it became Columbus in this country.
