Note: According to Journal-Patriot on July 20, 1972, there isdocumentation that Harrison Caudill and his son Martin, settledin what is know as Basin Cove on the Wilkes/Alleghany Countylines in 1866 or 1867. Harrison had 22 children and Martin had14.James Harrison Caudill was my 2nd great-granduncle. I thoughtsome of you mightenjoy this information: There is a place on the Blue Ridge Parkway that is called WildCat Rock and from there you can look off down the mountains andsee a little cabin - that cabin is whereHarrison Caudill raised his family. Harrison and two of hisbrothers, Thomas and Ruff, went to Wilkes County to settle. After a short time, Thomas and Ruff went back to Surry Countyand Harrison bought their adjoining farms, giving him a total ofabout 500 acres there in the mountains. Harrison built himself acabin and home in which he raised his family, but in 1916, aflood washed away part of his house. He moved into the cabinwhich his brother Ruff had built a number of years prior to thisevent. It was here that Harrison lived until his death in 1924.One thing that was always amusing to everyone was that of his 22children, half were boys and half were girls and half werered-hair-heads (as they were called), and half had brown hair(Harrison had red hair). They were a real pioneering familythat worked hard to make a better life, but suffered throughmany hardships and sorrows such as the week in which four of hischildren died with scarlet fever. The following is part of theobituary and tribute to James Harrison Caudill which was writtenby his son-in-law, Wiley Combs: "Harrison Caudill was born February 3, 1839 and departed thislife September 15,1924. His stay here on earth was 85 years 7 months and 12 days.He was married toMary Candis Tilley in 1857. Unto this union were born sixchildren (two girls and four boys). The Lord saw fit to call hiscompanion away to the better home leaving him with six littlechildren. He afterwards married Sarah Jane Tilley and to thisunion were born 16 children (nine girls and seven boys), 22children in all. Six preceeded him in death, also his secondwife proceeded him in death. Two or three years after thedeparture of his second wife he married Alpha Wagoner, 1912. He professed a living hope in Christ and joined the PrimitiveBaptist Church atWhiteoak in Surry County, before the war, and was a soldier inthe warfare for the Lord of glory. The church went down atWhiteoak where he first joined and when Basin Creek Church wasorganized, he joined there by application and a goodrecommendation and remained a faithful member till death, filling his seat as long as he was able to go to church. He honored his profession, and contended for the faith, firmunto the end. He laboredhard through life, and had much trouble and trials, but from thefruit he bore we feel, and assured that he is sweetly resting on the other shore withmany of his loved onesgone on before. He was badly afflicted in his old age, had heart dropsy and wassitting in his chairtalking to one of his grandsons and died suddenly. His body wasdeposited in thefamily graveyard by the side of his second wife to wait theresurrection. He leaves histhird wife, sixteen children and a large connection to mourntheir loss, but weep notchildren, our loss is his eternal gain."Sharon KĂȘasa
