The Widow Conaroe 1650??
I am looking for descendants of the Conaroe, Conro, Conrow, Conorro (numerous spellings). Below is a short history of The Widow Conaroe and a note that I
made during the transcription if a type-written paper that I recieved from my mother before she had brain damage from a long term ailment. She told me that the
paper arrived at her office in 1980. She doesn't recall if she hired the research done or if someone else had it done for her. I will be posting this same message in
the other 2 spellings of this surname here in Genform.
Thanks
Jim Graves
There are 2 entries for Mathew Allen in the marriages 1320-1980; # 820.000 and # 16527.000
820.000 gives a marriage date of 1686 and Rachel's birthdate of 1663
16527.000 gives a marriage date of 1687 and Rachel's birth date of 1660
Mathew Allen was born in England between 1645 and 1655, and died in Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. He married, first, in England, the widow
Conaroe. About 1687, he married, second, Rachel French. In his will he left legacies to Isaac and Jacob Conaroe alias Allen apparently stepsons. This appears to
be the beginning of the Conroes in America.
In the early years, there appears to be many spellings of the same name; Conaroe, Conorro, Conro, Conrow are amongst the most common.
In the 17 century, we have Jacob and Isaac mentioned above, also James, possibly another brother; all living in or near Chesterfield, Burlington County, New
Jersey. The 1773 Militia Census lists Darling, Darling, jr,
**Note (James Dale Graves) the above line is written "exactly" from the paper given to me from Joyce Genevieve Graves
...Darling, Darling, jr, ...
in fact I corrected it from ...Darling, Darling Jr.,...back to ...Darling, Darling, jr, ...on 102899 because after I originally typed it up (and made what I supposed
was the correct way it should have been written), I cut it apart and pasted the particular persons info into
the “Notes” section (in Family Tree Maker) under their individual names and deleted the original file. But I can’t help but wonder if it shouldn’t be ...Darling,
Darling Jr.,...instead of ...Darling, Darling, jr, ...**
Jacob, Joseph and Samuel living in Chester and a Levi in Monmouth County. Darling jr, Joseph and Samuel are all sons of Darling Conroe; Jacob is a nephew.
The 1793 Military Census (all males between the ages 18 and 45) lists Thomas, Andrew, Andres, Isaac, Samuel, Joseph, George and Aaron Conrow living in
Burlington County, with Luke and Jacob living in Monmouth County.
William Conroe was born 16 Apr 1756, at Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He moved to New York City at the age of 14. Later, he moved to the
town of Nine Little Partners in Dutchess County. He was drafted into the New York Line of the Continental Army in January of 1779 and was stationed at
Poughkeepsie. While there, he moved his family from Nine Little Partners , a distance of about 20 miles, so that, he could take care of them. After a year, he was
discharged from the army and later, he moved to Livingston in
Columbia County. He Married a Ruth ___________ in Livingston, either in 1799 or 1800. He died Oct 5 1833. The above information was taken from affidavits
that he filed to get a Veterans Pension.
Silas Conro (1) (1795-1858), is believed to be the son of William (above) by a previous marriage. He moved to Chazy in Clinton County about 1820, where he
bought land in the La Roche patent. He married a Patty ______ about 1819 She died 7 27 1839. He married, second, Irena _______, who died 10 15 1850 and
married, third, Nancy Clark. He died 14 10 1858.
Reuben Conrow (2) (c1833-1886) son of Silas and Patty was born in Chazy about 1833. He married Elizabeth Parady of Beekmantown, about 1859. They
settled in Chazy where about 1866, Elizabeth drowned. By 1870 Reuben had married Emaline (Parady?), believed to be a cousin of Elizabeths and moved to
Ionia County, Michigan. They settled on a farm in Berlin township. Later he bough another farm in Boston Township, where he died 22 11 1886.
William Conroe (3) (1861-1939), son of Reuben and Elizabeth, was born in Chazy 23 Apr 1861. As a young man, he took up the work of a fireman, first on the
railroads, then on the Great Lakes. By 1900 he returned to farming, when he married Martha B. Merritt. He died 30 Jan 1939.
William Conroe either married Maggie Gulthrite (1865-1937) circa 1891and moved to Grand Forks, ND or and had daughter Eunice Emily (1892-1988) or they
moved there after Eunice was born. They divorced circa 1893-94 and Maggie returned to Berlin Center, Mi. with daughter Eunice Emily . Evidentially William
Conroe moved back to Michigan, where Eunice later met her half sister Cynthia and half brother Glen (more on Glen below). Joyce says that Eunice told her
(Joyce) that Cynthia told her (Eunice) that she always told her father that "I wish I had a sister". She (Joyce) says that William got sick of hearing it all the time and
finally said "You do" and let the 2 (Eunice and Cynthia) meet.
Joyce says that Eunice was raised by her grandmother (her mothers or fathers mother??) for the most part, as her mother (Maggie) lived in Ionia and worked in a
corset factory there. The grandmother lived quite a ways out of Ionia to the north.
Glen Conroe married Avis _________ on Dec 8 1934. They had Velma Jean 1935, Ronnie 8 30 1936, Bonnie 5 31 1942, Eugene 7 3 1945, Christine 2 26
1947 and Carolyn 7 17 1949
