To All Daniel Keith Conatser Researchers
Daniel Keith Conatser has always been a challenge. We know that he married Ann Marcum in Marion County, Tennessee but divorced her before leaving Marion County in the late 1840s.He shows up in the 1850 census of Pike County, Arkansas with Mary L. (some say Mary S. but a closer look at the original census records confirms it is Mary L.).Mary's last name has been a mystery as long as we have been researching this family.Recently, we ran across an old newspaper article that once and for all establishes that her last name was GARNER.For anyone interested, I would be happy to send the URL for this newspaper article. Also, we were given a photo of Mary's grave marker in Pike County, Arkansas. It reads, "Mary L. Conatser departed this life on the 1st of June, 1865, being 35 years and one month olde. She was the wife of Daniel K. Conatser.Peace to her memory".Mary was the mother of Esther E., James Jerry (my wife's great-grandfather), Jane L., F.A. (a son), Christopher Columbus, and Ellen Catherine. All of these children were born between 1850 and her death in 1865.Daniel's third wife was Elizabeth Wilhelm. This marriage is the only one of his three marriages that is well documented. It is recorded in the marriage records of Franklin County, Arkansas. That record says they were married August 11, 1871.Daniel lived his final years on the mountain above Altus, Franklin County, Arkansas. He was buried on his land in a cemetery that has long been abandoned. At one time, older family members have reported there was a large marker on his grave.Unfortunately, at some point, that marker was knocked down and has not been located in years.
