Jacob Conrad, Augusta Co, Virginia and Reading, Pa , 1750's
Hi,
I'm looking to see if anyone has seen any credible research on the Conrad family of Augusta County, Virginia. To be honest and blunt, what I've seen is some of the worst research yet - mainly the same info passed around from some old county history, with not a shred of references.Whenever I see people say "his wife was X or maybe Y, or maybe Z, and was born on A, or B, or C" - well, it's probably just time to start over and throw away all the old stuff.
Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone can show that the Jacob Conrath Jr/Sr on the ship Patience in 1750 is the family in Augusta Co, VA (or Pendleton Co, or etc).My concern is that the ship list includes two Jacob Conraths and no children. So it *can't* be Jacob Jr supposedly born in 1744 (he would have been 6 and not signing himself on a ship list). So maybe this is Jacob the settler and his father? What is the evidence for tying the Switzerland Jacob Conrad of 1705 to the ship list and then to Virginia? What some people don't seem to realize is that there Jacob Conrad's scattered all over Pa and on several ship lists.
Second, are there any records in Virginia with the same signature as the ship list? The spelling of Conrad as "Conrath" isn't rare, but it's not common either and could be verified.
Anyways, my interest here is to figure out who the Jacob Conrad was that took out a warrant in downtown Reading, Berks County, in 1752.The original deed (I have a copy of the deed) refers to "Jacob Conrad in Augusty County in Virginia, Smith" (Berks Deed B2:552, 13 Apr 1765).
Warrant 22 Apr 1752, returned 8 May 1752.Here are the land records, but they don't really offer anything other than the lot number.

Does anyone have any links to good research on the Augusta County Virgina Conrad's?I'd like to see how this Jacob fits in.It would seem Jacob stopped in Reading, Pa (but I can't find that he made his presence known otherwise), moved on to Augusta County, VA, and sold off his speculative land in Reading.
Thanks,
Tim
