Stephen S. Conroy Dr. Stephen S. Conroy of Gainesville died Monday at Palm Garden of Gainesville. He was 76. Dr. Conroy was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and moved to Gainesville in 1960. He was a retired history professor for the University of Florida. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa and was a Fulbright Scholar. He taught at UF for 32 years. He also taught for one year at Wroclaw University in Poland. Before coming to UF, he taught at Auburn University and Youngstown University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He volunteered for Friends of the Library. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Shirley Conroy of St. Augustine; daughters Erin Rebecca Conroy of North Wales, Pa., and Deborah Ream of St. Augustine; a son, Timothy Patrick Conroy of Gainesville; a sister, Teresa Kistler of Youngstown; and one grandchild.
