Hi Kellie,

I am pretty sure that your Cotuan is not a variant of Contois.

The line I am most familiar with is Gilbert dit Comtois (Contois). That surname came from the fact that the Gilbert family came from Franche-Comté. It would be like calling yourself Picard if you came from Picardy, or Poitevin if you came from Poitou.
