Hi Colin:
Thanks for that information.Very interesting.Couple of points:
I read somewhere that the name Coomber/Comber arose in Sussex. However, there seem to me to be far more persons of that name in Kent!
As far as the name Comber being attributed to people who worked in woolen mills - to my knowledge, there never were any woolen mills in the south-east.I could be wrong!
Regarding the crossover of names in one town, I have found a Barbara 'Comber' born Horsham district (which includes Nuthurst) at the right time.As this is the only Barbara with either surname, it might be 'my' Barbara.I am keeping her in my Unidentified Coomber file for the time being.
Does anyone have any idea WHEN the name [both spellings] arose?Or any idea WHERE the name arose.
Is anyone thinking of starting a one-name study?
Colin,do you have any comments on the above?
Cheers
June in B.C.
