COOMES, COONS, KOONS, KOONTZ, Etc Y-DNA Test Group
Announcing the Y DNA Surname Project for all surnames that appear to be any of the seventy or so variations of COON, KUHN, GOHN, KOONTZ, KOON, Etc.
I am attempting to contact other researchers interested in a Y chromosome DNA study of the surnames listed above. We hope to attract other male participants who are interested in this project. All that is required is a small sample, swabbed from the inside of the cheek with a small brush like a toothbrush. (The Y-chromosome used for the test is not found in females, but is passed down essentially unchanged in the male line, so that men descended from a common male ancestor will show matching patterns.) This type of Y chromosome DNA test can determine relation between individuals and families, but not direct descendancy from one ancestor, and certainly not total individual genetic identity (only a maximum of 25 "loci" or genetic markers are used).
Beyond confirming relationships the testing can confirm the lack of relationships which will help prevent wasted time on un-related lines.
