Copeland Genealogy book published!
“An American Genealogy: The Copeland Family of Montgomery County” by Cousette Copeland
Using voices from the past and hundreds of vintage photographs and family trees, Cousette Copeland presents a pictorial genealogy and family history that brings alive the Copeland family of Montgomery County Kansas.
The descendants of “Earless John Copeland” the Quaker martyr moved from Alamance County North Carolina to Parke County Indiana and finally to Montgomery County Kansas in 1882. Abner and Samantha Jane Copeland traveled by train with small children, their possessions, livestock, and supplies. In Kansas, the Copelands bought and farmed land, developed the local community, and helped build S.E. Kansas’ first Friends Meeting Place (Quaker church).
Copeland began with a scrap of paper, a few names, and the power of the internet and old-fashioned letter-writing skills. She tracked down almost all living descendants of the Copeland family. Compiling their stories and photos, Copeland presents a complete and fascinating retrospective of one large farming family, sharing each Copeland’s life and times. In conversations with the ancestors, Copeland allows readers to journey to the past, understanding the life and times of those Early Settlers and Old Pioneers.
“An American Genealogy: The Copelands of Montgomery County” demonstrates how others can successfully search out family history and make lifelong family connections!
