hello Lynsey - Just read your note on the Copp forum. I am just getting back into tracing my husbands family. Like you we had nowhere to start from. S I went through the phone books to find the same surnames, that way you can find out densities of population of names. Some areas of UK don't have any Copps. There are lots in the S.Wales area and lots in the Devon area. After a bit more research I discovered the Copps were mainly from the Colyton/Honiton area of S.Devon and the Torrington area of N.Devon. Back in the 19th Century it was easier to travel by boat across the Bristol channel than go by land so it made sense to go to S.Wales to look for employment especially in the coalfield areas. Hence a lot of Copps in the Swansea area. Can you establish any links with Devon? Do you have any dates, places of birth, marriage etc. because census returns can help a lot. I have the 1881 census on C.D. so if you wanted I could look up details for you.
I have gathered a lot of info. on the Copps in general in my searches so I may have even got your ancestors tucked away in my files without knowing.
Talk to me soon. Judy.
