Okay...in the earlier years..it was quite common to give the children their mothers maiden name as a "middle" name. So you might have a very important clue right there.
Now as far as the spelling, Coppedge versus Coppage, those are two spellings for the same last name. I know my ancestors alternated between the two spellings. It might be because someone else was taken the information and spelled it as it sounded. I have also came across Coppedge spelled like Coppidge and Coppige. There are many others I'm sure.
