Sir Thomas Coram of the Royal Navy

I was in England a few years ago and I had an opportunity to visit the Coram Museum in London. It is dedicated to Sir Thomas Coram of the Royal Navy who apparently established the first foundling home (orphanage) in London. Later I heard that he was never married but that he had adopted many of the orphans and given them his name. Anyone have more info on this?
