John Timothy Foley
John Timothy Foley, died peacefully July 27, 2011, one day before his 90th birthday, following a courageous two-year battle. John often known as "Jack" in the Southington business community and "Tim" in the neighborhood was a lifelong resident of Southington.
He was born July 28, 1921, the son of the late Edmund J. and Helen (Kranich) Foley. He had graduated from Lewis High School in 1939 and entered the U.S Army in 1940, serving in active duty with the 41st Infantry Division, in the Pacific and the Island of New Guinea, and obtained the rank of captain. During his active military tenure, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Presidential Unit Citation, the American Defense Service Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the World War II
Victory Medal and the Purple Heart. Following active duty, he became a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. He was recalled into active duty during the Korean Conflict serving in Germany during the reconstruction. He was a member of the Connecticut National Guard Reserve until 1971.
In 1953, Jack formed a partnership with his friend Ralph Forgione, and began F & F Concrete Corporation in Plantsville where they started with two concrete mixers. F& F successfully grew to a much larger and updated fleet of equipment, serving customers throughout central Connecticut. He retired from F & F in 1984. He was also a partner in Pattenbrook Construction Co. in the 1960s and '70s, building Pattenbrook Country Club. He was a former director of the Southington Savings and Loan and the State Savings Bank, Cheshire Academy and the Southington YMCA. He was a member of the Exchange Club, the Knights of Columbus, a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, American Legion Kiltonic Post No. 72, a member of the Retired Officers Association, a former Southington volunteer firefighter and, most recently, a member of the Southington Board of Police Commissioners A passionate golfer, he belonged to the former Pattenbrook Country Club and Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, In recent years, when his golf score didn't suit him, he enjoyed almost daily games of gin rummy with his friends at Shuttle Meadow. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Church.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, June (Burkhardt) Foley; his daughters, Michele Taylor and husband, Tom, Colleen Corley, Rebecca Foley, and Johanna Foley; his grandchildren, Vanessa, Matthew, Ryan, Wesley and Taylor and Jessica; and three great-grandchildren, Sophie and Marin and P.J.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Reeve; and two brothers, Robert Foley and Edmund "Teddy" Foley.
The funeral was held Aug. 1, 2011, at DellaVecchia Funeral Home to St. Thomas Church for a Mass. Burial was at the convenience of the family at St. Thomas Cemetery.
