Hi Eric,
Happy to hear from a maybe believer. My info may be too long for this Post so will only type small version with
more, re. info of Children etc., to be shared via personal email.
The following is from my notes in Ref. to Matheus Cornelissen Van Nieuwkirk, b. bet. 1642-47 in Slichtenhorst, Gelderland Province in Holland, died May 12, 1705 in Bergen NJ.:
Matheus may have adopted the surname Cornelison which his decendants may have been known by.
The decendants also dropped the latter part, Van Nieuwkirk, which had been used to identify where the immigrant Matheus had come from.
This has caused confusion because some researchers still list Matheus's decendants as some variation of Newkirk spelling, Nieukirk/Nieuwkirk/Newkerk etc.
The information on Matheus & decendants was obtained mostly from Dr. Adamson Bentley Newkirks Papers on Newkirk families (published by the Historical Society Of Pennsylvania in 1934) and W.N. Hurleys Book on Neikirk Newkirk Nikirk & Related Families (Revised Version). There was mention of Matheus & his brother Gerrit in Old Dutch Church Register (@Kingston NY) as witnesses at baptism of Matheus, son of Pieter Lambertsen Geertruy Matheussen, on 6/9/1695. Geertruy was daughter of Matheus Cornelissen Van Nieuwkirk & Anna Lubi.
Matheus Mar. 1st Anna Lubi Dec. 14,1670 in Bergen NJ Church.
Matheus & Anna had 5 Children. Anna died Dec. 20, 1685.
Matheus Mar. 2nd Catryna Paulus Aug. 15,1686 Bergen NJ.
Matheus & Catryna had 8 children. Catryna died May 7,1764.
