Hi Thom,
As near as I can recall (and I will try to consult with my older brother to see if this is also his recollection), we discussed this in the family in regard to our various "nationalities" on my mother's side of the family. The story was that the family line included English, Dutch, Scotch-Irish, German and Indian. The "Dutch" came from the Wm. of Orange thing, and as I recall, the German was a part of that whole picture, also. The Indian was connected with an early ancestor in Canada "marrying" an Indian.(But that may have been on the Sims side.)
The Scotch-Irish had to do with the protestants in Ireland.I don't know whether it was a larger generic than just those Scots who were moved, or moved there, but I do know that my grandmother said that there was no "Irish" blood in the family, and by that, I know she meant at least catholic, and probably folk more native to Ireland than her folk.
I know..........just heresay, but it is a repeated story, as you point out.I haven't been able to get back further than Lurgan with my ancestors, and I guess you are in the same boat.
One other thing, I also have heard (just once, and only heresay heresay, if you know what I mean) that the family might have changed their name from Connor.
Have you seen the will of Thomas the Immigrant.........and do you remember his mention of a relative "late of England" (which might have meant the British Isles)...and could that have been your Lurgan people?
Well, we will continue to dig.Keep in touch.Harriet
