It took a while, but I have come back to this name you gave me. James Mason Cotnam was a young doctor in the Marion Co., TN area at the time of my great grandfather's birth. I am now entertaining the idea that he was probably named after this doctor, maybe he delivered him. I have heard of others named after their doctors or neighbors. Marion Co. is part of a triangular area between Jackson Co., AL and Hamilton Co., TN so it is entirely possible that this is what happened. I still have no leads on his parents, though.
